Wayne Hennessey: FA panel conclude ‘ignorant’ Crystal Palace goalkeeper didn’t know what a Nazi salute was

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey did not know what a Nazi salute was when he was charged with making the gesture in an Instagram post, an FA panel has decided.

The 32-year-old Welshman will face no punishment after the charge was found not proven – and the regulatory commission has published its written reasons for the decision.

It remarkably states that Hennessey has a ‘lamentable degree of ignorance about anything to do with Hitler, Fascism and the Nazi regime’.

The goalkeeper, who was pictured with his right arm in the air and left arm above his mouth, always maintained that any resemblance to the Nazi salute was coincidental.

Instead, he insisted he ‘waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it’ and ‘put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry’.

From the beginning of the hearing, Hennessey declared he had no idea what a Nazi salute was and the panel considers that a genuine possibility.

“Improbable as that may seem to those of us of an older generation, we do not reject that assertion as untrue,” the panel said.

“In fact, when cross-examined about this Mr Hennessey displayed a very considerable – one might even say lamentable – degree of ignorance about anything to do with Hitler, Fascism and the Nazi regime.

“Regrettable though it may be that anyone should be unaware of so important a part of our own and world history, we do not feel we should therefore find he was not telling the truth about this.

“All we would say (at the risk of sounding patronising) is that Mr Hennessey would be well advised to familiarise himself with events which continue to have great significance to those who live in a free country.”

The panel subsequently concluded that Hennessey was indeed trying to attract the attention of the photographer, Jordan Bussolini.

After a quiet first-half, Chelsea sparked into life when Olivier Giroud stooped low to head in the opener.

Then Hazard stole the show, setting up Pedro for the Blues’ second, before scoring from the penalty spot and linking up with Giroud for a superb second.

That looks set to be his last ever Chelsea goal – and the club have reportedly already agreed a fee with Real Madrid.

According to The Sun, Chelsea will receive £100m with a possible further £15m in add-ons, with Hazard signing a four-year deal worth a basic £400,000 a week.

Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona: Reds legend Phil Thompson says Champions League semi-final was ‘most astonishing match I’ve ever seen at Anfield’

Liverpool legends Phil Thompson and Gary McAllister believe the Reds̢۪ amazing Champions League comeback against Barcelona was the greatest ever night under the lights at Anfield.

Three-time European Cup winner Thompson said it was ‘the most astonishing match’ he has ever seen, as Liverpool overcame incredible odds to beat Barca and seal their place in another final.

Few gave Jurgen Klopp̢۪s men much hope, as they were tasked with fighting back from 3-0 down after their first-leg defeat in Spain.

But they stunned all their doubters with a thrilling performance against the Spanish champions, with Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi each scoring twice to seal a 4-0 victory – Liverpool progressing to the final 4-3 on aggregate.

‘The Miracle of Merseyside’ has been hailed as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever European wins, but Thompson believes it could be the greatest ever victory at Anfield.

â€Å“It was the most astonishing match I’ve seen at Anfield,” the former defender told talkSPORT host Jim White.

â€Å“Yes, we’ve had some wonderful ones, Olympiakos and Saint-Etienne and people will always remember them, but they were nothing compared to this one because of who they were actually playing against.

Former midfielder McAllister was similarly stunned, saying Barcelona were left ‘in shock’ by the pressure they were put under by Klopp’s side and the atmosphere created by the buzzing supporters.

And the Scot believes Liverpool now deserve to lift the trophy after their semi-final heroics.

â€Å“Before the game, as much as my heart was saying Liverpool can do it, I just thought Barcelona would score,” he told talkSPORT.

â€Å“To watch the game unfold, it was just incredible, I couldn’t believe what I was watching.

Jordan Henderson: New role means Liverpool midfielder could be the key to their Premier League title hopes

Jordan Henderson: New role means Liverpool midfielder could be the key to their Premier League title hopes

Jordan Henderson has been Liverpool’s most in-form player in recent weeks and was once again vital as they went back ahead of Manchester City.

It was his cross at the start of the second-half, that allowed Sadio Mane to nod Liverpool into the lead against Chelsea, while his all-round display helped Jurgen Klopp’s side keep up their relentless pursuit of winning the Premier League.

Henderson has been superb for Liverpool

6

Henderson has been superb for Liverpool

But few would have predicted the England international would end up be such an important player, given he has divided plenty of opinions over the years and after voicing his desire to play further up the field, he is backing up those claims with a number of inspired displays.

The scene is Old Trafford, there are 72 minutes on the clock. In the red corner you have the Liverpool manager and in the other red corner you have the Liverpool captain. The decision is unanimous, Klopp emerges the winner, but Henderson is far from happy with the outcome, it’s contentious, he has been substituted for Xherdan Shaqiri and can not understand why.

He applauds the fans, each clap harder than the one before, ignoring Klopp’s outstretched hand. He was frustrated at being played out of position, he had a point to prove and had not been allowed to, until now.

Henderson was not impressed at being taken off against Man United

6

Henderson was not impressed at being taken off against Man United

On Sunday, there was no such repeat, Henderson was again hauled off, this time for James Milner, but he was more accepting, hands were shaken, there was an embrace between manager and player at the final whistle, the job against Chelsea was almost done. Henderson had more than played his part and not for the first time.

While the headlines were inevitably taken up by Mohamed Salah’s thunderous effort, or Eden Hazard’s inability to convert after he decided he would once again, single-handily try and haul Chelsea back into a match, Henderson was actually the most impressive, as he has been for some weeks.

With Fabinho guarding the backline in a defensive role, Henderson had been set free. It was his foray into the box, Steven Gerrard style, that culminated with a delicate cross onto the head of Mane, Liverpool were in front.

Henderson had created two chances and one had led to the deadlock being broken, his touches in the opposition box has increased considerably too, from an average of 1.3 to 5 at Anfield yesterday.

Liverpool would end the match back on top of the Premier League.

The midfielder came on to score against Southampton

6

The midfielder came on to score against Southampton

â€Å“When I play the deeper position my role changes and I try to do different things and I can’t affect it as much in the final third,” Henderson said after the win over Porto. â€Å“In this and the last game when I play in a [more attacking] position I feel as though I can make a difference going forward as well,” he said after speaking with Klopp about reconsidering his position on the field.

That last game he was referring to, was against Southampton, Henderson came off the bench, another late surge ended with a goal. The ensuing celebration was filled with joy, there was a hint of relief also, it was his first strike or assist in 49 matches, another significant contribution at a crucial stage of the season.

Yet turn the clock back to the start of the campaign and you would probably have been laughed at had you tipped Henderson to be a vital cog in Klopp’s title-chasing machine.

During the World Cup semi-final, Henderson was guilty of poor decisions, his passes were wayward, he failed to dictate and steady the England ship against relentless Croatian waves. While Luka Modric controlled a submarine heading towards the final, Henderson was struggling to steer his dinghy.

Henderson was no match for Luka Modric in the World Cup semi-final

6

Henderson was no match for Luka Modric in the World Cup semi-final

When Henderson was signed from Sunderland, there was a collective groan from the red half of Merseyside. A willing, honest player, he was no Xabi Alonso, comparisons with the legendary Gerrard were inevitable, even if Joey Barton thought otherwise.

‘Someone somewhere trying to make Henderson, heir to Gerrard’s throne. It will end in tears. He isn’t and will never be capable. Not many are,’ he wrote, one of five critical remarks made against the 28-year-old.

In Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography, he noted his reason for not bringing Henderson to Old Trafford: â€Å“The modern footballer runs from his hips, and we thought this gait might cause him problems later in his career.

Henderson played alongside Steven Gerrard

6

Henderson played alongside Steven Gerrard

Granted Henderson lacks the grace of Alonso, he never will be a Gerrard and his role as a deep-lying midfielder became synonymous with the sideways pass, the safe option as pointed out by a number of pundits, but his improvement in recent weeks has been noticeable, hard to ignore, even if you are not a fan of his.

Against the Czech Republic, Henderson was everywhere, breaking up play and contributing in attack and defence, it was he who begun the build-up towards the opening goal for Raheem Sterling.

The following match away to Montenegro, Henderson was benched, but came on in a more advanced role, as a No.8, to set up the fourth and fifth, just like he unlocked Porto in the Champions League. We all know what happened against Chelsea.

Henderson is enjoying the best period of his career

6

Henderson is enjoying the best period of his career

As a gruelling season nears the end, Liverpool’s midfield was in need of a new dimension, fresh impetus, few would have considered Henderson to be the desired change, but he has been, his energy key when those around him have started to tire, Henderson is playing some of the best football of his career.

While it was Klopp’s hand he refused to shake just a couple of months ago, Henderson has since forced the same limb with his persistence and belief and Liverpool are reaping the benefits as a result.

Jurgen Klopp finally seems to have found his ideal midfield trio of Naby Keita, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. And it could win Liverpool a double.

Football: Ikhsan Fandi scores in third successive match for Raufoss

SINGAPORE - Ikhsan Fandi's rich vein of scoring form continues as the Singapore striker found the net in his third consecutive match for second-tier Norwegian club Raufoss IL in just 11 days.
On Wednesday (May 22), the 20-year-old opened the scoring at third-tier Fram Larvik in the 33rd minute of the second-round Norwegian Football Cup tie.
Capitalising on the uncertainty within the Fram defence, Ikhsan clinically chipped the goalkeeper to give Raufoss the lead.
However, the hosts equalised in the 88th minute and after a goal-less 30 minutes of extra time, Fram emerged 4-3 winners from the penalty shootout after Ikhsan and Anton Henningsson missed the fourth and fifth spot-kicks respectively.
While Ikhsan was upset about the penalty miss, he took comfort in the fact that he completed his first full match for Raufoss and kept up his scoring streak.
He had grabbed his first competitive goal for Raufoss on May 12 with an 89th-minute bicycle-kick winner in the 3-2 victory over Skeid, before scoring his second with a towering header in the 5-2 defeat by Sandnes Ulf four days later.
He told The Straits Times: "This is my first 120-minute game and I'm exhausted. I'm happy to be in such good form because I've been working hard and I will do my best to keep scoring.

"I was shocked with the finish because it wasn't typical of me to finish this way, but I just reacted instinctively when I saw the defenders waiting and staring at the ball after losing possession, and went for the chip.
"For the penalty, I placed my shot to the right but the goalkeeper read me. We are disappointed to lose the match but we just have to focus on helping the team do as well as possible in the league now."
Ikhsan had started and played 45 minutes of the first-round match against Toten, which Raufoss won 5-2 after extra time. He also featured in seven league games this season, all as a substitute, and his two league goals have come from just 127 minutes of action.
He will now focus on recovering from the cup exertions and hope he has done enough to earn a first league start in Sunday's away league match at second-from-bottom Notodden.
Raufoss are currently sixth - and within the four playoff spots behind the top-two automatic promotion slots - in the 16-team league with 13 points from eight games.

Michael Gray and Sasa Ilic were reunited on talkSPORT just days before the repeat of the 1998 First Division play-off final between Charlton and Sunderland takes place.

Ilic saved the decisive penalty from Gray in a shootout victory of Sunderland as the Addicks won promotion to the top-flight.

The match was tied at 4-4 after extra-time in what is remembered as one of the greatest play-off games of all time.

Now, for a place in the Championship, Charlton and Sunderland go head-to-head in the League One play-off final on Sunday, in a game which is LIVE on talkSPORT.

Gray and Ilic, who will both be at Wembley cheering on their former clubs, joined Ally McCoist on Friday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“You are cruel, you lot, terrible,” Gray said. “I’ve had quite a busy week, my phone’s not stopped so I’ve had to get out of the country!”

After 13 perfect penalties from Charlton and Sunderland players, Gray had to score to put the pressure back on the Addicks.

But Sasa dived to his right and saved a tame spot-kick from the former England defender.

“First of all, I didn’t want to take a penalty, being a local lad, I thought they’d be finished after five,” Gray added.

“I looked around and there were a couple of younger lads, Jody Craddock, Darren Williams, and Danny Dichio, a centre-forward, he had his boots off!

“When you put the ball down on the penalty spot… and I made my mind up on where I was going to put it when I was walking up to take it.

“When I picked my spot, I didn’t make good contact with the ball and I saw Sasa jumping across to his left-hand side and I just thought ‘oh no, he’s saved this’”.

The pair were team-mates for a brief time at Leeds in 2005.

And Gray had better luck against Sasa from the penalty spot in training.

“Sasa has actually stayed at my house,” he said. “I was on loan at Leeds with him, on the first day of training, he gave me the ball and said ‘right, come on then Micky’ and he made me take a penalty against him and he nearly saved that one as well!”

“He went in a different corner, I did get a hand to it, but I thought ‘I can’t do this to the same person twice!’” Sasa added.

In an attempt to get over his play-off heartache, Gray, accompanied by some of his Sunderland team-mates, went to Aiya Napa on holiday.

And the 44-year-old bumped into Clive Mendonca, the Charlton hero who scored a hat-trick against Sunderland at Wembley.

“I went to Aiya Napa with a few of the younger Sunderland lads,” Gray said.

“The first pub I went to, I walked straight to the back and who was there? Clive Mendonca. Did he buy me a drink? I wanted to throw one over him!

“I can’t wait to see you on Sunday, Sasa. I’m working with Sky on the day, but I’m sure they’ll be cameras on us, let’s hope the result is the opposite this time.”
