Sean Cox: Brother of Liverpool fan who suffered serious injury in attack by Roma supporter says their lives have ‘changed completely’

Martin Cox has told talkSPORT about how his family’s lives have been turned upside down after his brother Sean was attacked outside Anfield before Liverpool’s Champions League match with Roma.

Sean, from Dunboyne, was assaulted by a Roma supporter before Liverpool̢۪s quarter-final tie against the Italian club 12 months ago.

Sean Cox suffered catastrophic head injuries in the attack

He needed emergency surgery after suffering a bleed on the brain having suffered impact injuries to his head.

He spent many months in hospital following the attack and was later moved to a rehabilitation centre in Dublin.

Sean left care this week for the first time since the assault took place.

His brother, Martin, has told talkSPORT about the evening the events unfolded.

â€Å“I was actually with Sean that evening,” he revealed. The both of us had travelled over on the Tuesday morning.

â€Å“It was the biggest game of the season. We were buzzing to get there and had been there so many times down the years.

â€Å“It was horrific because I was standing beside Sean when the attack took place.

â€Å“It has just changed our lives upside down completely.

â€Å“At the very beginning I just thought that Sean was out cold and it just got more serious by the minute.”

He continued: â€Å“When the paramedics came and he was lying motionless on the ground we knew something wasn’t right.

â€Å“We were praying inside that he had just been knocked unconscious and we’d get to the hospital and Sean would wake up, have a bandage around his head and get out and say ‘what the hell was that all about, we missed a pretty big game’.

â€Å“It’s tough. It’s extremely tough. It has changed our lives completely.

â€Å“Day-by-day for Sean from the start was very hard as we didn’t know what road we were going down.

â€Å“Thankfully, since October, when Sean moved out to the National Rehabilitation Centre here in Dublin he has come on a lot.

â€Å“He’s getting the right rehab and the right facilities are there for him.

â€Å“There’s a long, long journey ahead and it is a massive struggle.

“The progress is slow and sometimes cruelly slow. At the moment there has been improvement.”

A Liverpool Legends vs Republic of Ireland Legends match has been organised for Friday evening to raise funds for the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust, with the likes of Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush taking part in the fixture at Dublin̢۪s Aviva Stadium.

Sean Cox is set to attend the match, it was confirmed last week.

â€Å“It’s a milestone in Sean’s journey,” Martin added. â€Å“It was only recently the decision was made that he was well enough to come out.

â€Å“We don’t know how long he can attend the match for but he’s coming and that’s the main thing.

â€Å“Even if it’s half an hour or an hour, as long as he’s there as it is a milestone.

“Watching the Liverpool legends that myself and Sean grew up watching like Ian Rush and King Kenny is just fantastic and marvellous.

â€Å“They’ve given Sean such a massive boost as well.”

And ahead of the game, Mr Cox has addressed the public for the first time since the attack in a video for Off The Ball.

The Dunboyne native sent a thank you message to those who have supported him in the 12 months since the incident.

A Roma supporter, Simone Mastrelli, was jailed for three-and-a-half years in February after pleading guilty to the assault of Mr Cox.

Football: Guardiola stays cool despite shock Man City defeat

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he was not disappointed by his players' effort despite suffering a surprise 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday (Dec 22).
Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the home side at the Etihad but Palace hit back with goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Andros Townsend followed by a Luka Milivojevic penalty.
Substitute Kevin De Bruyne gave City late hope but it was not enough and they remain four points behind leaders Liverpool after their first home defeat of the season.
"We started quite decent and created chances," Guardiola told the BBC. "We scored a fantastic goal and after they passed the halfway line they scored.
"The third goal... we cannot concede the penalty we conceded. We have to try and avoid it. Football is like this. Three shots on goal and three goals.
"It's complicated but we fight until the last second. We are in December and we will try and recover and try and win games again."
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson put his side's victory down to hard work.

"You don't produce that sort of performance by waving a magic wand or having a five-minute team talk - there's a lot of work that goes into that structure and we were excellent," he told the BBC.
"We are playing against a team with enormous skill levels and their focus, their ability to sustain attacks, is an example to us all."
He described Townsend's goal as "magnificent".
"I wouldn't say I thought he was going to score but he gave himself a chance. It will be a contender for goal of the week, if not goal of the year."

Speaking to the media, Southgate said: “I definitely heard abuse at Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game… We’ll make sure that’s reported officially. It’s not acceptable.”

â€Å“There’s no doubt in my mind that it happened and it will be reported officially. I don’t want to speculate but I know what I heard.”

“I’m not sure yet [whether others were abused]. I had a quick chat with Danny but I’ve not had a chance to speak to Raheem yet.

“I know what I head, and we’ll definitely deal with it the right way. We’ve got to make sure we support our players.”

Despite falling behind to Montenegro against the run of play, England continued their blistering start to their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a 5-1 win in Podgorica.

However, the only thing that was left on Jimenez’s face by the end of the game was egg as Watford brought it back to 2-2 before winning the game 3-2 after extra-time.

It means the Hornets will face Manchester City in the final on May 18, while Wolves’ very good cup run – which saw them beat the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United – came to an abrupt end.

Watford striker Troy Deeney mocked ‘loser’ Jimenez for his mask celebration after the game and Hornets legend Blissett, who played at Vicarage Road in three different spells for a combined total of 14 years, labelled it as ‘disrespectful’.

He then suggested the striker should consider a career change if he wants to act like a ‘cartoon character’.

Speaking on The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, Blissett said: â€Å“Jimenez will be disappointed and embarrassed at the fact he did that celebration. It’s disrespectful.

â€Å“Wearing masks and stuff like that – leave that to the supporters.

â€Å“You, as a player, score your goals and you celebrate with your team-mates and the supporters around you and that’s where it should start and end.

Football: Son's South Korea survive Bahrain scare to reach Asian Cup quarters

DUBAI (AFP) - Son Heung-min's South Korea needed an extra-time winner to beat world ranked 113th Bahrain 2-1 as they stumbled into the Asian Cup quarter-finals in unconvincing fashion on Tuesday (Jan 22).
Kim Jin-su's diving header at the end of the first extra period proved the difference as the two-time champions met unexpected resistance before winning in Dubai.
But Paulo Bento's side, runners-up in 2015 and one of the favourites for the title, survived to reach the last eight, where they will face Qatar or 2007 winners Iraq.
Tottenham star Son took a boot to the head as he weathered some robust challenges in a first half which South Korea dominated with 73 percent of possession.
Bahrain nearly stunned the Koreans with Mohamed Marhoon's stinging early shot as South Korea took time to settle into their rhythm.
But from the half-hour Son started to make his presence felt with some typically direct running which caused panic in the Bahrain defence.
South Korea broke the deadlock two minutes from half-time, when Son laid off to Lee Yong whose cross was parried by the goalkeeper to Hwang Hee-chan, who snaffled the easy chance.

South Korea threatened to run riot after the break before Bahrain hit back and it took a magnificent flying stop from Kim Seung-gyu to keep out Jamal Rashed's thumping effort.
And against all expectations, Bahrain were suddenly level with 13 minutes remaining when Mohamed Al Romaihi smashed in the rebound from Mahdi Al-Humaidan's shot.
The goal stunned South Korea, who had only conceded twice at an Asian Cup game since 2011 - the 2015 final, which they lost 2-1 to Australia after extra time.
Hwang Ui-jo nearly snatched the victory in injury time, when a defensive mix-up put him one-on-one with Sayed Shubbar Alawi, but he spooned his shot wide to set up the additional 30 minutes of play.
South Korea's first goal had been their only shot on target but they looked determined to put that right and substitute Lee Seung-woo should have done better when he was set up in the box by Son's strong run.
Bahrain goalkeeper Alawi withdrew with an apparent hamstring injury but one of the first tasks for his replacement, Abdulkarim Fardan, was to pick the ball out of the net.
Substitute Kim Jin-su found time and space to steady himself and drive home a header from Lee Yong's cross, a goal which the team celebrated by holding up the 16 shirt of injured Newcastle United midfielder Ki Sung-yueng.
Ju Se-jong also rammed a shot against the post in a positive finish for the Koreans, and while they celebrated there were tears from the Bahrainis at the final whistle.
