The wife of goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who suffered a heart attack while training with Porto just three weeks ago, has revealed she is fighting ovarian cancer.
Sara Carbonero announced the shocking news in an emotional social media post.
The 35-year-old TV sports journalist wrote: “When we hadn’t yet recovered from one shock, life has surprised us again.
“This time it’s me, that six-letter word I still struggle to write.
“A few days ago during a check-up, doctors described a malignant ovarian tumour and I have been operated on.”

Carbonero, who has been with the legendary Spain goalkeeper since 2009 and has two sons with him, added that the cancer was caught ‘in time’ but that she has months of treatment ahead of her.
“Everything has turned out okay and fortunately we caught it in time but I’ve still got some months left fighting while I have the corresponding treatment,” she continued.
“I’m calm and confident everything is going to be okay. I know the road will be tough but will also have a happy ending.
“I have the support of my family and friend and a great medical team.
“I take advantage of this moment to ask that my journalist colleagues show the respect and understanding they have always shown me, especially in these difficult and delicate times for me and my family.”
Casillas, the former Real Madrid and Spain glovesman, has reportedly called time on his career despite only recently signing a new contract with the Portuguese club.
The 37-year-old suffered an acute myocardial infarction earlier this month while at Porto’s training centre and was rushed to hospital.
He has been offered a position in Porto’s backroom staff by Pinto da Costa, the club’s chairman, with the role understood to be an ‘international ambassador’.
