Top journalists respond to Pep Guardiola after Manchester City boss claimed ‘media desire Liverpool to be champions’

Britain’s top football writers have hit back at Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola over his claims the nation’s media ‘desire’ for Liverpool to beat his team to the Premier League title this season.

City beat Leicester City 1-0 on Monday night to jump back above the Reds to the top of the table.

Guardiola’s men now just need to beat Brighton in their season finale on Sunday to be crowned champions for the second successive year.

After the nerve-shredding clash, which saw captain Vincent Kompany smash in the winning goal from 30 yards, the Spanish boss couldn’t resist taking a shot at the press.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “My feeling here is the media desire Liverpool to be champions.

“We were seven points behind Liverpool, we could have been ten points had Liverpool beaten us here, but we never give up and have won 13 games in a row.”

But a host of top writers joined talkSPORT host Jim White on Tuesday morning to respond to the City boss… and not one of them agreed with his view.

Instead, they insisted the media only wish for drama and excitement in the title race, which there has been in spades this season.

John Cross, Daily Mirror: “I don’t agree with that at all. I do think there’s a feeling Liverpool would be an amazing story, the romance of having not won it for so long, and yet there is a fear among other football fans that we’ll never hear the end of it if they do win it this year.

“My personal view is this is the best title race ever. It’s the best title race in Premier League history. Both teams are pushing boundaries, and the point tallies tell you that.

“I’ll always support the best team and I think overall if Man City do go on to win they will have proved themselves the best team.”

Matt Dickenson, The Times: “I can’t agree with Pep on that. I’m sure there are a few journalists with allegiances or a liking for Liverpool, but I think most journalists simply want drama.

“I don’t wildly care who comes out on top on Sunday, I’d just love to see a few more twists and turns and make sure there’s some excitement on the day, that’s my main wish.”

Laura Williamson, Daily Mail: “The suggestion the media want or expect Liverpool to win is definitely not right. What we want is the best story. Whether that is the romanticism of Liverpool winning it after so many years, or City doing it again for the second year in a row, I don’t think we’re really bothered, because it’s the best story.

“We have got that, because of City’s relentlessness, their excellence, the way they’ve won match after match after match, and the fact the title is going right down to the wire and will be decided on the last day.

“So actually, it’s not about Liverpool winning or Man City winning, it’s the story, and I think we’ve got that.”
