Vincent Kompany would’ve been Manchester City’s best summer signing, says Stuart Pearce

Departing Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany would have been the club’s best signing this summer, according to Stuart Pearce.

The 33-year-old will leave City to become player-manager of Anderlecht this summer to end 11 years of service at the Etihad.

Kompany’s final season with the club saw him lift the Carabao Cup, Premier League and FA Cup as City secured a historic domestic treble.

The Belgium international played a crucial role in City’s title run-in, starting the final four games and scoring a 25-yard screamer to secure a vital 1-0 win over Leicester.

Pearce, who managed and played for the Citizens, told talkSPORT: “When I was watching Manchester City train pre-Pep, you could see influence Vincent had on the training pitch.

“One thing I said yesterday was the best signing of the summer could be Vincent Kompany – to keep him at the club, keep his influence and hang on to leaders within the group.

“I’d be very interested to hear how that conversation went between Vincent and the club. You’d bet it would have been very amicable.

“But it’s where he goes from here, is it retirement or is it to play football elsewhere or is there a management opportunity?

“Vincent’s been, arguably over last ten years, the best captain and best leader there’s been in the Premier League.”

Kompany has signed a deal to become player-manager of Belgian side Anderlecht, the club he started his career with.

But Pearce believes the defender will return to the Etihad in the future.

He said: “If you’re going to bow out with Manchester City there’s probably no better season to do it than here and now with what they’ve achieved this year.

“He’ll have a connection with Manchester City in the future, whether that’s coaching, managing or as a statesman at the club, he’ll certainly have a future at City.”

Kompany made 360 appearances for City, winning four Premier League titles, four EFL Cups and two FA Cups.

A distraught Liverpool fan was reduced to tears live on talkSPORT after seeing his team miss out on the Premier League title.

It was ‘close but no cigar’ for Liverpool in the Premier League this season

It was a dramatic final day of action in the Premier League – with the Reds at one point looking on course to beat rivals Man City to the title.

Cheers erupted around Anfield after Brighton appeared to have made their wildest dreams come true by going 1-0 up against City at the Amex Stadium.

It meant Liverpool, who led Wolves 1-0 at the time, were top of the ‘as it stands’ table – but that only lasted for 21 first-half minutes as City staged a comeback to beat Brighton 4-1 and claim the crown by just one point.

It was an agonising way to miss out on the trophy all Liverpool fans want their team to lift.

And it was all too much for Terry the Red, who was soon left sobbing on air as he looked back on his team’s brilliant league campaign which saw them lose just one game – against City – and end on a club-record 97 points.

Ally McCoist even wanted to give him a cuddle!

Speaking on Sunday night’s Extra Time, Terry said: “Oh mate, I just…

“What else have we got to do to win this Premier League? Can to tell me that?

Football: Doan penalty sends Japan through to Asian Cup semi-final thanks to VAR

DUBAI (REUTERS) - Ritsu Doan scored a second-half penalty awarded by the newly-introduced video assistant referee (VAR) to give Japan a 1-0 win over Vietnam in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup on Thursday (Jan 24).
FC Groningen's Doan drove the ball into the bottom left corner, beating Vietnam's Russian-born goalkeeper Dang Van Lam who had guessed the right way after the spot kick was awarded in dramatic fashion shortly before the hour mark.
Appeals for a foul on Japan's Maya Yoshida in the box were initially dismissed by the referee, only for him to change his mind after a VAR review, with the technology being introduced into the tournament from the last-eight stage onwards.
Japan survived a late onslaught from the Vietnamese with Nguyen Cong Phuong in particular missing an opportunity to equalise in the 89th minute when he found himself unmarked just outside the box but blasted the ball over.

Arsenal news: Wojciech Szczesny slams ‘extremely arrogant’ Robin van Persie and says Samir Nasri thought he was a ‘gansgster’

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has described Robin van Persie as ‘extremely arrogant’ while also sharing his feelings on Samir Nasri and Alexander Hleb in a wide ranging interview.

Szczesny spent eight seasons with the Gunners, before leaving permanently for Juventus in 2017, while Van Persie swapped the Emirates for Old Trafford to join Manchester United in 2012.

Szczesny has labelled Van Persie as ‘arrogant’

Despite the Dutchman contributing significantly to United winning the Premier League in his debut season, by finishing on 26 goals to earn the Golden Boot, Szczesny felt the striker, who now plays for Feyenoord in his native Holland, would have achieved more had he stayed with Arsenal.

“He could have made other decisions and achieved lots more at Arsenal,” he told Foot Truck.

“He’s extremely arrogant – sometimes.

“I have to admit, he left for Manchester United and the following year won a title.

“However after that, he got benched, moved to Turkey and his big career ended.”

The Poland international also did not hold back when speaking of Arsenal’s ex-midfield pair Nasri and Hleb.

Szczesny said: “Nasri always thought he was some kind of gangster.

“Everyone has this guy at school, who had strong and big friends and it made him think he was cool.”

On Hleb he said: “‘He could have achieved more in football. He still had a great career but he liked to drink.”

Szczesny was on the bench as Juventus fell to their first Serie A defeat of the season on Sunday, losing 2-0 to Genoa.

Nonetheless, the Turin club remain 15 points clear at the top of Serie A.

Wojciech Szczesny gave a less than complimentary appraisal of his "extremely arrogant" former Arsenal team-mate Robin van Persie. The 28-year-old goalkeeper came through Arsenal's youth ranks and established himself as the number one at the Emirates Stadium, while winning two FA Cups and the Premier League Golden Glove award with Petr Cech.

The Spanish Jamie Vardy: From almost quitting football to a Spain debut at 30 – Jaime Mata is one of the great underdog stories

The Spanish Jamie Vardy: From almost quitting football to a Spain debut at 30 – Jaime Mata is one of the great underdog stories

Tired of modern football? For anyone looking for a story to restore their faith, the unlikely case of newly minted Spain international Jaime Mata should help.

In his mid 20s, the striker was still only semi-pro, and a series of near-misses suggesting he was destined for no more than languishing in the lower leagues. Yet on Saturday, he stepped out in a Spain shirt at the Mestalla at the ripe old age of 30.

Proof that with hard work, it’s never too late to get your break.

Mata celebrates the end of Spain’s win over Norway with Marco Asensio.

Mata celebrates the end of Spain’s win over Norway with Marco Asensio.

Most top footballing talents these days are spotted as teenagers then carefully developed, with their path to the top meticulously planned by the big clubs.

Mata, on the other hand, was about to turn 26 and had been deliberating over abandoning his football dream to become a customs officer, when then Girona sporting director Oriol Alsina spotted him playing with Lleida in the third tier.

“I had just finished studying and I thought going to Lleida would be a couple of sabbatical years, like an Erasmus,” the now Spain international reflected in an interview with Cadena Cope last week.

A post shared by Jaime Mata Arnaiz (@mata_jaime9) on

It’s easy to see why Mata had little cause for optimism: with Lleida he had twice cruelly missed out on promotion to the second division at the play-off stage (setbacks are a recurring theme in his career).

Far from the glamour of La Liga, in the Spanish third tier there is no money of note. Not getting any younger and seemingly not going to make it as a pro, switching to a different career with a steady income must have looked very tempting at that moment in time.

Then Girona came calling: “I had the chance to be a professional, and that was absolutely crazy for me. I thought, maybe I can keep doing this for a bit longer?”.

Alsina, the man who signed him, didn’t last long at Montilivi, but the sporting director’s punt on a lower-league striker marked the start of a domino effect that has carried on all the way to the very top. In the more immediate future, Mata would have an impact at Girona too, twice finishing as one of their top scorers as the Catalans made it to the play-offs for promotion to La Liga, only to – yes, you guessed it – fall at the final hurdle on two occasions.

Día de derbi 🥊

A post shared by Jaime Mata Arnaiz (@mata_jaime9) on

Like with Lleida, two times with Girona was too many, and instead of sticking around for what seemed like more disappointment at Montilivi, the forward moved to Valladolid in the summer of 2016. The cruel irony? At the end of that season Girona were finally promoted to La Liga for the first time in the club’s history. Valladolid finished seventh. Just imagine how Mata felt then.

Paso a paso, golpe a golpe, asalto a asalto! Gameday 🔴⚪️

A post shared by Jaime Mata Arnaiz (@mata_jaime9) on

But what followed was the most pivotal season in Mata’s career. While at Girona his talent was obvious, so too was his inconsistency: in two seasons of more than 40 games he scored only 21 goals, both capable of exciting periods of brilliance then frustratingly long dry spells.

It wasn’t form that suggested La Liga level regularity in front of goal. Nor was his first year at Valladolid, when he only managed five strikes in the league, and often ended games as an unused substitute.

No one could have predicted what would happen next. In the 2017/18 season Mata morphed into the epitome of what the Spanish call a “killer”, a pure goalscorer. It felt like every shot he took ended up in the net: with 35 strikes including two in the play-offs, he was the key figure in taking Valladolid back to La Liga for the first time in five years. His numbers were so good it was the second best all-time goalscoring return for a striker in the Segunda, only bettered by Sporting Gijon forward Ricardo’s 46 in 1956/57.

Mata celebrates play-off victory with Real Valladolid last season.

Mata celebrates play-off victory with Real Valladolid last season.

Mata puts the dramatic shift down to nothing more than “confidence”.

Whatever it was, Getafe had seen enough, snapping him up on a free transfer last summer in what has now proven to be one of the deals of the season.

Playing in a way only someone with no time to lose can, the signing has made remarkably easy work of the step up to La Liga, scoring 15 goals in 29 games so far in 2018/19. For Getafe, remember.

Gran trabajo, gran victoria!

A post shared by Jaime Mata Arnaiz (@mata_jaime9) on

Incredibly, Madrid’s least fashionable side are in fourth place and only 10 games away from qualifying for the Champions League for the first time ever. Mata, their top scorer who has turned half-chances into goals, and assisted seven for his teammates, is a huge part of that. No one really believes Getafe can do it, but then no one believed Mata could either.

He is only the third Getafe player ever to be called up for Spain, evidence of just how exceptional a story it is for him to even be there alongside the likes of Sergio Ramos and Jordi Alba, let alone to make his debut as he did against Norway.

Mata argues with Atletico Madrid ace Saul

For Mata, it is all a bonus. This is someone who last week admitted to being blown away by the luxury of not having to wash his own kit when he first debuted in the third tier: “I used to come into the dressing room and think wow, there are two physios here, that’s so cool!”. He couldn’t have imagined then just how much better things would get.
