Manchester United have been told they must get rid of Alexis Sanchez this summer – even if it costs them a fortune.
Sanchez was given a rare start in attack against Huddersfield by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, his first in 12 games, but he failed to take the chance to impress in the disappointing 1-1 draw, which ended the club’s hopes of Champions League football.
The 30-year-old Chilean did not even play the full match, limping off in the 54th minute to be replaced by Tahith Chong.
It has been a nightmare spell at United for the former Arsenal player, who moved to Old Trafford in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January 2018.
He has scored just three times in the Premier League, despite collecting wages of around £500,000-a-week.
In his Times column on Monday, Tony Cascarino said Sanchez has become a huge burden for United, likening his situation to Jack Rodwell’s at Sunderland.
Rodwell joined Sunderland from Manchester City for £10million in 2014 on a huge wage packet but endured a disastrous spell, which finally ended last year after he agreed to cancel his contract.

Sanchez is under contract at United until 2022, but Cascarino claims the club must move him on in the summer whatever the cost.
“There are so many players at both Manchester United and Arsenal who have under performed this season that it is hard to put a finger on who has been the worst at each club,” said Cascarino.
“Alexis Sánchez going off injured against Huddersfield summed up his United career. He has been awful value for money since joining from Arsenal in January last year.
“United need him off their books, even if it means paying him off. He has become their Jack Rodwell: on huge wages and so injury prone.”
