Following a weekend of international football, the Premier League made a return and as always, it produced some riveting games.
There were matters at both ends of the table being affected with Manchester City looking to regain top spot ahead of Liverpool, while Huddersfield were determined to preserve their top flight status for one more week at least.
Below you can read about the best of Saturday’s Premier League action.
Brighton and Hove Albion 0-1 Southampton
Southampton held on for a 1-0 win over Brighton at the AMEX Stadium which also boosted the Saints’ prospects of staying up.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored what turned out to be the only goal in the 53rd minute but Brighton pressed for an equaliser, with Anthony Knockaert among those who missed good chances.
Burnley 2-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Burnley also boosted their survival hopes with a 2-0 win over Wolves at Turf Moor.
Conor Coady’s second-minute own goal gave the Clarets a dream start and although the visitors dominated for much of the second period, 19-year-old Dwight McNeil fired home the second goal in the 77th minute.
Crystal Palace 2-0 Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield’s defeat at Selhurst Park and the wins for Southampton and Burnley confirmed their relegation from the Premier League.
Wilfried Zaha was brought down in the area by Juninho Bacuna, referee Lee Probert had little choice but to award the 76th-minute penalty that essentially consigned the visitors to relegation. The reliable Luka Milivojevic confidently finished down the middle as Hamer dived, giving Palace the lead.
Zaha then sent Van Aanholt clear in the 88th minute and watched as the full-back shot at an angle past Hamer and into the back of the net.
Fulham 0-2 Manchester City
Goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero ensured Pep Guardiola’s side went back to the top of the league.
Silva stroked home a neat opener on just five minutes, pouncing on Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s poor misplaced pass.
Aguero then latched onto Silva’s smart inside ball, steadying himself before chipping the advancing Sergio Rico.
Leicester City 2-0 Bournemouth
Jamie Vardy’s 82nd-minute header sealed a comfortable 2-0 win for Leicester over Bournemouth.
The Foxes had taken the lead in the 11th minute through Wes Morgan and Vardy’s late intervention confirmed a third straight win under new boss Brendan Rodgers.
Manchester United 2-1 Watford
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match as permanent Manchester United boss ended with a victory at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Abdoulaye Doucoure scored late on for the impressive visitors but it was United who moved up to fourth with the win.
West Ham 0-2 Everton
Everton built on their impressive 2-0 win over Chelsea a fortnight ago with a victory at West Ham by the same scoreline.
It was a comfortable game for Marco Silva’s side against the lacklustre Hammers, with the result sealed by first-half strikes from Kurt Zouma and Bernard.
Everton have leapfrogged West Ham into ninth, while Manuel Pellegrini’s men drop to eleventh.
