Roman Abramovich will watch his first competitive Chelsea match in a year when he takes his seat in the stands for their Europa League final match with Arsenal in Baku.
Abramovich, 52, did not attend any matches at Stamford Bridge during the 2018/19 campaign due to the denial of a visa extension by the UK government, following increasing tensions with his native Russia.
However Abramovich, who took control of the Blues in 2003, is expected to be in Azerbaijan next Wednesday as his club look to win the trophy for the first time since 2013.
Abramovich’s only recent public appearance at a Chelsea match was for last week’s Holocaust Memorial friendly in the US against New England Revolution, which they won 3-0, but lost midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek to a serious Achilles injury in the process.
LATEST FOOTBALL NEWS
Abramovich reportedly turned down Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £2billion offer for the club last summer, amid speculation the Russian was ready to cut his losses in west London and sell to Britain’s richest man.
He also put plans to redevelop Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium on hold amid his visa troubles, leading to suggestions he is no longer willing to invest in the club, something later denied by chairman Bruce Buck.
“Everything he’s doing reaffirms his commitment to Chelsea,” Buck told Sky Sports.
