Manchester United: Nine names who could rival Rio Ferdinand to the sporting director role

Manchester United are on the hunt for a new sporting director in the summer to assist Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in trying to get the Red Devils back amongst Europe’s elite.

Ed Woodward, executive vice-chairman of the Premier League giants, is set to introduce a new role which will take over responsibility for the club̢۪s transfer dealings, as part of a restructure at United this summer.

Rio Ferdinand, a six-time title winner at Old Trafford and former teammate of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has emerged as the frontrunner for the position.

But who else could be in with a shout? talkSPORT.com has identified the potential candidates for the hot-seat…

Rio Ferdinand

The Red Devil legend has met up with Woodward over the position and is the frontrunner for the job.

He is an admirer of Solskjaer and the pair achieved great things together in their playing career, could they do it again?

Fabio Paratici

The Italian has been in the sporting director role at Juventus since 2010, playing an instrumental role in the club’s eight consecutive title successes.

He has been responsible for signing some immense talent, including the likes of Paulo Dybala, and he may be the perfect fit to propel United to glory again.

Edwin Van der Sar

The former shot-stopper is another person whose name has been thrown into the hat.

He is enjoying life as CEO at Ajax as the Amsterdam club go through their best spell in recent memory – with a Champions League final now in sight following their victory over Spurs on Tuesday evening.

Paul Scholes

The former midfielder had a bad stint in charge of Oldham but his hard-hitting and honest approach could be exactly what United need.

He cares deeply about the club and you couldn’t suggest he would not give his all to the role.

Eric Cantona

The Frenchman is a fan favourite and appointing him would please the Old Trafford faithful.
